OMAA students attended the Friendship Tae Kwon Do tournament held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 in Virginia Beach, VA. This was the first WTF martial arts tournament of the New Year for OMAA.
Attending the tournament were Kian, Scott, Neil, Anastasia, and Rachel. This was a very well organized event that started on time and completed early.
Forms Competition
Anastasia - Anastasia competed for the first time and did an outstanding job by placing 3rd in her red belt female division.
Rachel - Rachel also placed 3rd in her female green belt division. Her limiting factor of only knowing basic forms while going up against kids with more senior forms will hopefully be rectified by the next tournament. The fact that she placed in her division speaks volumes on her technique.
Scott - Again Scott did an outstanding job in his black belt forms division by pulling in 2nd place. He was outscored by the kid he defeated in the previous tournament. This only goes to show that these competitions are decided by only a few points to determine the winners.
Kian - Kian placed 3rd and has really stepped up his seriousness in medaling at the forms competitions. With additional hard work he hopes to continue his advancement in this division.
Sparring Competition
Rachel – Rachel was first up at sparring. She had no other girls in her division so she went up against the 7 year olds. Although she was at a disadvantage in height, she attacked with a purpose and faced her competitor head-on. However, it was not enough and was defeated at the end of her 2nd round. Her competitor went on to take 1st in her division, while Rachel took home 3rd place.
Neil – Although Neil has not been able to attend a lot of practices to prepare for this tournament, he decided to still compete. Neil shows good potential, but without the additional committment to practices, it will be a difficult road ahead. At the end, Neil was unable to obtain enough points to move on to the medal rounds.
Kain – By far the best anyone has seen in Kian in the sparring competitions. For the most part Kian stuck with what he’s been practicing and was aggressive in his attacks. At the end of the 1st round Kian was tied 4-4. In the 2nd round Kian was down by 5 points and placed 3rd. Both competitors where exhausted with a final score of 10-15. Kian’s competitor went on to place 1st in the light weight black belt kids division.
Scott – With a less than typical performance at this tournament, Scott was flat for the better part of both rounds. Scott lost his match in the 2nd round with a final score of 0-4. Scott’s competitor went on to place 1st in the fin weight black belt boys division, while Scott received 2nd place. Afterwards, Scott was noted as not being pleased with his own performance and is committed to not having a repeat performance of how he did today.
